Nintendo may be planning to release the SNES Classic Edition soon following the hit release of their NES classic during the holiday season. Recent reports suggest that Nintendo's recent move may be a hint on what could be next for their gaming console.

The release of the SNES Classic Edition may soon become a reality, as Nintendo recently registered a trademark for the Super Famicom controller. According to WWG, Nintendo registered the trademark on Dec. 5, which led to countless speculations as to what the video game product distributor could be planning on next.

The popular theory is that Nintendo will soon be releasing the SNES Classic Edition after discovering the demand for its NES Classic. However, there are also speculations that the SNES controller may be used for the Nintendo Switch, which is its virtual console service.

The Nintendo Switch helped gamers revisit their favorite games from former consoles such as the DS family, Game Cube, etc. The publication also notes on the possibility that Nintendo may simply be overprotective when it comes to their controllers.

This move may be a reflection that Nintendo did not realize just how popular their NES classic would be among gamers when they announced its launch during the holidays. As TechnoBuffalo points out, this has resulted to a shortage of stock, as Nintendo has underestimated the demand for the popular console.

"The overall level of demand is certainly greater than we anticipated," explained Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aimé. "That's why we're suffering through the shortages out there in the marketplace."

Nintendo decided to launch the NES classic in hopes of reconnecting with those who started gaming using the popular console and introduce it to the younger generation. Production of the NES classic is said to continue as long as there is demand for the console.
