Caroline Weinberg of Engadget and the team of the Sweethome recently conducted several hours of research, interviews with a number of experts and several number of hours of product testing to find out which of the available digital thermometers in the market are the best for home use for kids and adults alike. If the preference for thermometers to use is via oral, rectal or axillary the research of the party shown definitive results favoring the Vicks Comfort Flex Digital, on the other hand, if the choice is through ear or forehead measurement, the go to product was the dual function, iProven forehead and ear DMT-489.
The technological development and integration of thermometers deemed the old mercury based ones obsolete. Thermometers come in many forms, the main key is to find the most suitable, accurate and consistent ones in measurement or reading while giving the least amount of discomfort to none at all.
Measuring the temperature through the mouth is the most familiar way for home use and still the practice in the medical field. The stick thermometers are not complicated and offer fast and reliable readings. Though this way of measurement is tough to implement on toddlers and preschoolers, so that usual practice is ideally for children age five and up.
Oral thermometers are also feasible for rectal and axillary use too. The research focused on multifunctional thermometers to better see the perspective on the preference of use. In addition, aside from oral thermometers, ear and forehead thermometers are also available in the market for home use, and all possible models were considered while conducting this research.
The basic criteria for the selection were the thermometer should be fast, reliable, uncomplicated and easy to decipher without even the use of glasses. For the thermometer for oral, rectal or axillary use, The Vicks Comfort Flex Digital stood out in terms of speed and design. The average time of measurement is at eight seconds beating the nearest competitor three seconds faster. The very clear and well-lit display was far the easiest and simplest to read and it was the only thermometer that came in with a color coded indicator for fever.
For the other option of using thermometers through the ear or forehead the iProven DMT-489 was the best selection. Though other designs and models for the same use exist, due to the dual functionality of the product made it the best option. The iProven easily switches between the pair of options and also displays a clear, well-lit display.
