Forbes has chosen Scarlett Johansson as the top grossing actor of 2016. Marvel stars, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. were placed on the second spot after her. Johansson's movies grossed over $1.2bn in 2016 while Evans and Downey Jr. earned $1.15bn each. Johansson's movies that helped with the sales numbers include "Hail Caesar!" and "Captain America: Civil War." The list was topped by the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie starrer, Chris Pratt in 2015 and Jennifer Lawrence in 2014.

Forbes headlines this list every year which analyzes the global sales for the movies depicting various actors as per information from the website, Box Office Mojo. This list does not include animated feature films in the estimations and only relies on the movies with actual performances.

Johansson tops the list with other actresses in the top five positions such as the "Suicide Squad" starrer Margot Robbie and "Arrival" starrer, Amy Adams. Adams also played the role of Lois Lane in the "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" movie.

Another actress who has debuted on the list of the top grossing actors of 2016 is Felicty Jones. She grossed around $805m through this year's performance charts. Fans can see her in her latest released movie, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." Other movies that feature her are - "A Monster Calls" and "Inferno" which co-stars Tom Hanks.

Scarlett Johansson will be featured in the famous Japanese adaptation of "Ghost In The Shell" in 2017. The movie surely looks promising through the trailer released a while back. But, will it truly fulfil the expectations of the animated version? That is yet to be seen.

Scarlett's position as the top grossing actor 2016 is not new for female actors in Hollywood, but it does inspire other artists that nothing is impossible in the world of entertainment. What new movies are planned for the actor in 2017 is yet to be seen.
