Hyundai Working On Tucson Fuel Cell Successor; 2nd-Gen SUV Cheaper Than TESLA Model X
Athena DeeThe Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell is now reportedly considered to be the most expensive car of its kind. The 1st-generation model was just recently in 2014, but it has been reported by multiple new sources that Hyundai is currently hard at work at the vehicle's successor.
According to Nikkei Asian Review, the 2nd-gen variant will have an upgraded fuel cell that will improve the car's range by 30 percent. This means that the SUV can now travel from 265 up to 348 miles on a single full tank. This, in turn, will give the Tucson Fuel Cell a huge advantage over its competitors.
However, there is one particular issue that potential Tucson Fuel Cell buyers could be concerned about. Range anxiety does not seem to be significant at this point, but the problem lies in the fact that fuel refilling stations are not easy to come by.
The 2nd-gen Tucson Fuel Cell, which will be out by January 2018, is expected to best the range of Toyota Motor's Mirai - a fuel cell vehicle that was launched in 2014. It remains unclear whether it can challenge the Tesla Model X but these two vehicles are being pitted against each other since they are expected to launch in the same year.
Ahn Byung Ki, the Director for Eco-Vehicle Development of Hyundai Motor Group, told South Korean media that the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games will be the stage for the Tucson Fuel Cell's launch - in addition to debuting a fuel cell bus.
"We are going to make a big event with the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics," Ahn said, according to Automotive News. "It is a big event That is always a good opportunity for PR."
The Tucson has been reported to be a much cheaper option, compared to the Model X. The former is expected to sell at approximately $50,000, while the latter is priced at over $130,000.
