Crunchyroll has just unleashed its top anime list of 2016 and while "Yuri!! on Ice" was undeniably a hit among other series that was released last year, "Re: ZERO" proved to be a bigger deal. The details have been revealed and the streaming giant also has an answer as to why Subaru beat Yuri in the ranks.

What Brought "Re: ZERO" to the Top

In Crunchyroll's map, it was revealed that Europe, North and South America, and other regions around the world fell in love with "Re: ZERO." According to the streaming service, the series was met with excitement as it provided a fresh approach to the "trapped-in-a-video-game" genre.

The Story of Subaru

Subaru is the main protagonist in "Re: ZERO." He is a video gamer who was surprised to find himself in a world that appears to be like the one he sees in the games. With the knowledge he had on gaming, he journeyed into the mysterious world and came across characters who either helped him or defeated him along the way.

Why "Yuri!! on Ice" Didn't Claim Victory

Polygon notes that "Yuri!! on Ice" was 2016's most tweeted fall anime series. It was met with much love and applause due to its amazing story that integrated an LGBT theme and also introduced mental health awareness.

However, the biggest question is why "Re: ZERO" took over the top spot instead of "Yuri!! on Ice." According to a Crunchyroll representative, the reason behind is simple. "Yuri!! on Ice" started airing at a later date compared to "Re: ZERO."

The Power of Yuri Over Subaru

One of the highlights in the history of anime is how Yuri proved to be more popular than Subaru. Before the last episode of "Yuri!! on Ice" was streamed, Crunchyroll crashed. The streaming service explained at that time that the excitement for the finale, with numerous people catching up with the series at the same time, caused the site to experience server problems.

The results from Crunchyroll's survey and 2016 top anime series list may come as a surprise to many. However, "Yuri!! on Ice" remains one of the most popular shows that was released last year. Fans are expecting a second season but production has yet to make official announcements about a new installment.
