Top iPad Keyboard Accessories: Alternatives to Surface

Jonathan Charles

The unveiling of Microsoft's Surface tablets and the super thin keyboard accessories meant many Surface owners will see an option for full, non-desktop/laptop productivity. Despite the iPad being the market leader, the tablet isn't quite the productivity device Apple pitches it as, so are there keyboards available to increase productivity?

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard

The ultrathin keyoard from Logitech performs as advertised: it attaches to the iPad via a magnetic hinge, like Apple's Smart Cover and Smart Cases, and measures less than a cent coin in thickness. It measures just half.

It's available now for $99.

ZAGGfolio

The ZAGGfolio keyboard is a two-in-one product, combining a case and keyboard. ZAGGfolio protects the iPad while closed, and uses the same hinges as the Smart Cover to attach and turn the iPad on and off when open and closed respectively.

The keyboard can also be removed from the iPad for independent use.

ZAGGfolio is available now for $99. There's also an iPad 2 version.

Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio

Logitech's Solar Keyboard is the most unique of the bunch because it's powered by solar energy, as it's a Bluetooth keyboard. That means no charging is needed, unlike the aforementioned keyboards.

When closed, it encases the iPad, and not just the front of the screen like the Smart Cover. When open, it rests with a kickstand on the back, almost identical to the Smart Cover's implementation.

The keyboard can also be pushed inwards to conceal while watching an extended video or movie for example, and displays a row of media controls when in this mode.

Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio is available now for $129.99.

Logitech Keyboard Case

One of the early physical keyboards for the iPad, it's made up of a tray that the iPad can snap face-down into when moving around.

There's no magnetic hinges - it just locks into place. ZDNet said, therefore, the keyboard works best on a flat and even surface and not a person's lap. It works with the iPad 2 and the third generation new iPad.

The downside is the tray brings added bulk and excess thickness that's not in use when typing.

The Logitech Keyboard Case is available now for $79.99. It's the iPad 2 version, but posters on MacRumors claim the iPad 3 works with the keyboard.
