Google Play Brings Carrier Billing For Airtel & Vodafone Customers In India
Shena GolosinoLast year, Google Play introduced carrier billing in India. However, the feature was rolled out for Idea subscribers only. Now, the feature will expand to two of the country's largest mobile networks- Airtel and Vodafone.
According to Android Headlines, Google Play Store has started to roll out a direct carrier billing for Airtel and Vodafone subscribers in India. Android users who download and purchase apps, games and e-books from Google Play Store could directly bill their charges by their carriers. According to Medianama, this feature could reach roughly 182.6 million subscribers from these three carriers. Notably, carrier billing is more convenient than paying through credit cards and net banking.
However, this is only available for postpaid users as of this time. Some reports suggest that prepaid users will also be able to purchase on Play Store through these carriers using their prepaid balance soon. This is something that really needs to be worked out shortly by Google as the vast majority of the Indian population are prepaid users.
This is indeed good news, however, it could be said that this system in its greater part, is still a work in progress. There are no announcements and updates yet as to when these two carriers will be officially open for direct-billing. Moreover, some reviews have said that Google Play fall short of verifying the user accounts in authenticating the purchase due to the carrier's failure to send confirmation in SMS.
Through Airtel and Vodafone, Google could reach the majority of smartphone users in India, especially the prepaid users.
