2012’s Accessories: Top 3 So Far

Jonathan Charles

2012 has brought notable accessories across a range of form factors, and Mobile & Apps has covered some for iPad and Android smartphones. Outside of mobile devices, though, what's available, aside from keyboards and cases?

Pebble Smartwatch

Probably one of the most notable accessories, and notable Kickstarter projects, Pebble takes the potential of the latest iPod Nano to be a watch - due to its clock app and small form factor - and extrapolates the idea into a product consumers can buy. Or, at least, could buy: pledges can't be made on Kickstarter now as the project has ended.

However, the Pebble can be pre-ordered for $150 and releases in 2013.

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard

Covered on June 30 in the iPad keyboard roundup, the Ultrathin keyboard is just that: a thin attachable keyboard for iPads. Like Apple's Smart Cover, it connects via a magnetic hinge and can be used as a standalone product. It also works for an incredible 6 months on a single charge, so there's little chance of running out of battery life mid-journey.

Whether the iPad is a productivity device is another matter, but Mobile & Apps published a round-up of the best keyboards for the iPad - linked in the opening paragraph - if using a virtual keyboard extensively isn't an option.

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard is available now for $99.

Nike+ Fuelband

The Nike+ Fuelband monitors every movement the user makes and the idea is to measure every movement during the day to see how active users are. Nike has been offering its Nike+ apps on iPhones for a while for runners, with an Android version coming soon.

Fuelband effectively scores the activity of users and seems useful for environments which are traditionally more sedentary, such as in the office.

Nike+ Fuelband costs $149.99, so the iPhone apps may be adequate. Besides, there might not be time to keep fit in a busy office environment so going for a run afterwards after could be ideal.

The accessories above are just some of the best from 2012. Mobile & Apps also looked at Apple's Smart Case - the follow-up to 2011's Smart Cover - along with the essential iPad accessories.
