Uber's Latest Patent Uses Light Signals That The Uber Ride Is Arriving

Caroline Soriano

Lately, Uber has released an update about using people for their location, instead of the typical address. This has delighted many users as it has become more convenient to place their contact instead of the actual location. And now, the company is working on another update and for sure, it will yield the same feedback from many of its users.

Uber has registered a patent which involves a light to be used on top of cars that would suggest its users that their ride is arriving. The testing lights called "Beacons" was first registered in May 2014 but was granted only last January 3, 2017. (via Entrepreneur) The patent is consisting of a light bar that will be placed on top of Uber cars which has a color-changing section and can be controlled by the app that the passenger is using. It also involves the entire bar lighting up and allowing passengers to select various patterns.

Generally, the patent was created to provide ease and convenience because this will make it easier for Uber passengers to distinguish their incoming Uber vehicle. According to Business Insider, Uber is testing a changing light dashboard in three cities of US namely Denver, Miami, and Nashville, Tennessee. Also, it is running in Newcastle, UK. The said dashboard light works almost the same as the patented Uber's light bar where passengers choose the color on their phone as the light changes depending on the option they select.

However, Uber passengers from London should not expect the dashboard light anytime soon, not the eventual light bars flaunting on the street. This is because the London transport regulator says that any of the two -- the dashboard light and roof-mounted version -- are not permitted under the current legislation. Therefore, Uber has no upcoming arrangement about launching the lights in London.
