HDMI 2.1 Specification Announced With Support For 8K Videos, Object-Based Sound And More
Vinay PatelWhile differentiating between HDMI 1.4, HDMI 2.0, and HDMI 2.0a/b seems to be nothing short of a herculean task for many, a different spec standard will soon be added to the mix in the form of HDMI 2.1.
The new spec was recently detailed in a press release via HDMI Forum, which is an open trade association that spearheads the prospect of HDMI technology and rolls out new versions of the HDMI Specification. The new spec was announced Wednesday, January 4 at the ongoing CES 2017.
The newfangled HDMI Specification 2.1 offers support bevies of higher video resolutions and refresh rates inclusive of 4K videos at 120Hz and 8K videos at 60Hz for captivating viewing as well as fast-action detail. Aside from that, it supports Dynamic HDR and raised bandwidth via a new 48G cable for uncompressed HDMI 2.1 feature support encompassing 8K video with HDR.
In addition, the Forum also confirmed that the HDMI 2.1 is backwards-compatible with previous versions of the specification. It also provides eARC support for leading audio formats including object-based audio, and also supports advanced audio signal control capabilities such as device auto-detect, Gadgets360 reported.
Presumably, the new HDMI 2.1 specification has quite a lot to offer for avid gamers including support for Game Mode VRR in terms of variable refresh rate which allows a 3D graphics processor to produce a clearer image during gameplay. It also reduces frame tearing, stutter, and lag.
The Forum has announced that the said specification will be accessible to every HDMI 2.0 adopters. The Forum will notify when it is up for grabs in the first quarter of this year.
According to Robert Blanchard of Sony Electronics, President of the HDMI Forum, the new release of the HDMI 2.1 specification boasts an array of cutting-edge features that enhances consumer's overall entertainment experience, aside from offering effective solutions to the commercial AV sector.
