Digimon 20th Anniversary Celebration Drums Up Virtual Pet Nostalgia With Upgraded Digivice
Van DBandai Namco celebrates the 20 years of Digimon in the gaming business by launching an upgraded version of the original Digivice. The Digivice, a virtual pet device specifically for Digimon, was highly popular in the 1990s and is making a return with a few new features.
Bandai Namco recently announced that it will bring back an enhanced version of the Digimon device. The company will re-launch the original Digimon Digital Monster virtual devices in their original grey and brown colors. The Digivice will still feature the familiar box shape, three buttons and a keychain link that can be attached anywhere, writes GameRant. The original Digimon toys initially launched in 1997, featuring the adorable monsters from the series.
According to Bandai Namco, they will also upgrade the total available Digimon in the upcoming virtual pet device. The 20th anniversary Digivice will include monsters from the first five models, as well as those that became available during Digimon's 10th and 15th anniversary celebrations. Similar to the original gadgets, players can feed, train, play with and combine their different Digimon. Gamers can also further evolve their creatures into more powerful versions, compared to what was allowed in previous devices.
CrunchyRoll states that Digivice players can also battle each other and test the various Digimon that they raised and trained. Players can complete some tasks faster than before. The new Digimon toys also has a single-player arena mode where players can battle hordes of Digimon on their own. The Digivice version 20th is compatible with several others, including previously launched models, so both old and new players can have fun together.
The Digimon device will come in Original Gray and Original Brown. The creature Gabumon will be exclusive to the first model, while Agumon will be exclusive to the second. Digimon players who carefully trade and level between devices may acquire an Omnimon. Further, players can upload their Digimon online to compete in a virtual D-1 Grand Prix. The enhanced Digivice is currently available for pre-order until Mar. 27, 2017 at $32.30. The Digimon toys will officially ship out in June. More updates and details are expected soon.
