Fans of the original Game Boy are looking forward to its remake - the Super Retro Boy. The upcoming portable gaming device is designed to look and feel very much like the popular 1990s device.

The Verge wrote that the Super Retro Boy prototype was just as chunky as the original Game Boy. It had a plastic rectangular exterior that had the same familiar texture, although it is lighter. There are two color variants available - black and white.

The new model also featured four buttons, compared to the Game Boy's two. It still had the cross directions button (D-Pad), and the Select and Start buttons, although positioned horizontally, instead of the previous diagonal layout. It also showcased a color screen, which is a huge upgrade from the Game Boy's gray color palette.

The Super Retro Boy has four face buttons, namely the traditional A and B, plus L and R buttons that are similar to the shoulder buttons on the Game Boy Advance. However, the L and R button placement may not work well for some games. The screen has also been enhanced and looks sharp. The developer Retro-Bit refers to the display as "HD," although no specifications have officially been given yet.

Digital Trends revealed that the Super Retro Boy is the next third-party retro-facing console from Retro-Bit. The Super Retro Boy can play cartridges for Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. Players can still enjoy old but functional cartridges from their previous gadgets. There are also upcoming cartridges for the Super Retro Boy for gamers who no longer have their old games.

The Super Retro Boy provides about 10 hours of playing time on a single charge via microUSB. Those who purchase the Super Retro Boy will also receive a 10-in-1 cartridge. Overall, the Super Retro Boy feels solid and well-made, although the D-Pad may feel rather squishy. Its compatibility with cartridges from the three previous Game Boy consoles and long battery life are pluses too.

The new device will retail at around $79.99 when it launches in August 2017. More updates and details on the Super Retro Boy are expected soon.
