Starting January 9, all the NewYork City subway stations will have cellular and Wi-Fi service. This plan is a result of a partnership worth $300 million between Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and Transit Wireless. Now, the largest underground transportation system in the United States is completely wired. Now the daily commuters using this transport system can enjoy the great upgrades that have been made to the subway system. They can make calls from all the NYC Subway stations from January 9 onwards.

The latest and final addition to the Subway station, Clark Street on the Brooklyn 2/3 line went live on January 9 itself. South Ferry, Prospect Ave, 53rd St., and Bay Ridge are the other four stations which are being innovated currently or may be done so in near future.

"This will better connect New Yorkers who are on-the-go," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said last week, "and build on our vision to reimagine the country's busiest transportation network for the future."

This particular initiative is a part of a huge project agreement between MTA and Transit Wireless. The project is a 27 year partnership that will be worth $300 million. It focuses on making a properly functioning 4.9 GHz public broadband network which will be entirely dedicated to the underground subway station network. It also will include "Help Point Intercoms" which will connect passengers to emergency service provided by 911.

The work first began in 2011 on this project. Mayor Cuomo had announced this particular to bring a fully Wi-Fi enabled system last January itself. And now finally, the commuters will be enjoying a great communication system while commuting throughout the city. Are the New Yorker residents dependent upon this vast underground system excited about the announcement? Keep watching this space for more news and updates!
