'Pokemon Go' Could Be Blocked In China Due To Security Issues; Other Companies Trying Same Genre Need Licensing
Dannel Picaccio Camille Perez Lozano"Pokemon Go" is apparently one of the most popular apps ever created for the generation. Becoming a worldwide sensation immediately, there may be some parts of the globe that could not ride the global trend.
Niantic's promise of an augmented reality game to bring one of the childhood classics to Android and iOS devices everywhere has indeed happened, but such a great game can come with repercussions. This, for one, was witnessed by the Chinese government.
According to Reuters, the Chinese government is at the evaluation phase regarding the national security risks that "Pokemon Go" could bring. One concern by the State of Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television is the game posing a threat to geographical information security and the threat to transport, as well as the threat to personal safety of consumers.
"Pokemon Go," as previous reports claimed, received blame for numerous car accidents. Niantic Labs implied a speed limit within the app shortly after the release to avoid such conditions. However, China also pointed out how the augmented reality game requires the use of Google Maps, which the country apparently blocks out.
There are some Chinese companies, however, that are currently developing games of the same augmented reality context. Given that these will also require location-based services, the panel behind them are recommended to consult for licensure accordingly, as said in the same Reuters report.
"Pokemon Go" became the most downloaded app in Apple's App Store last year. Niantic Labs released one generation of creatures initially, as well as continuous updates that went on further through the months. Events also happen for special holidays and occasions, introducing a certain breed of Pokemon or a sleuth of bug fixes and updates alike.
