"Outlander" star Sam Heughan has found himself at the center of a pineapple mystery after claiming the tropical fruit was thrown at him on the set of "Outlander" season 3. Whatever that means is pretty vague up until now, and whether one would take it literally or figuratively is entirely up to his fans' discretion.

According to The Scottish Sun, Heughan is currently filming "Outlander" season 3 in Scotland. While there, the actor took to Twitter to announce a pineapple-related incident, which sent his fans into a frenzy.

Tagging "Outlander" season 3 co-star Caitriona Balfe, Heughan gave the pineapple a shout-out, prompting hilarious reactions from fans and Balfe herself. "@SamHeughan in your face!," the "Outlander" actress replied, an inside joke that fans have tried to decipher since Heughan's original tweet.

It did not stop there. Hours later, the "Outlander" season 3 hunk sent out another tweet, which started a swarm of sexual innuendos from his followers. Fans from all over the world then started questioning what exactly happened with the pineapple in question.

Balfe did not reply, but fans believe it was a code for something naughty. One fan tweeted: "Pineapple...is that code for something? Because you know what pineapples stand for..." Another follower hashtagged #PineappleNightmare and now on Heughan's Twitter thread are some memes that could fall into the NSFW category.

It's certainly not the first time a pineapple made the headlines. The "Outlander" season 3 actor's fellow Scot Calvin Harris also hit the news when he appeared on stage at the "X Factor" totting a pineapple. The crazy and nonsense earworm "Pen Pineapple Apple Pen" also became a cult hit in 2016.

The mystery of the pineapple may be forever buried on the set "Outlander" season 3 and, presumably, Sam Heughan is laughing about it. The upcoming season will premiere sometime in 2017.
