Apple, Google, Microsoft - All Will Have Foldable Smartphones In 2018
Athena DeeFoldable devices have developed into a trend in today's tech industry. One specific reason why such contraptions have become so famous of late is its capability to become as small as possible. Folding a mobile device gives its users a much smaller package and more portable item to carry around.
Although the device can be folded into a smaller piece, a foldable screen can drastically increase its screen size once completely folded out. Such feature is an advantage for both consumers and app makers. App developers get to have more room for their apps. Device owners can see more of their inbox, get to have easy-to-read text, and can engage more in their video calls.
According to Roel Vertegaal, the director of the Human Media Lab at Canada's Queens University, such foldable devices will be "produced like newsprint." With his experience in the creation of prototype models, he is certain that foldable or bendable mobile contraptions will eventually be much cheaper to build, according to CNET.
A Korean publication, etnews.com, had also recently confirmed that LG Display - the popular maker of unique screen displays - has partnered up with Google and Apple. According to the report, this partnership will bring forth "out-foldable" screens for the companies' upcoming smartphones. That said, LG Display is reportedly going to begin mass-producing the foldable screens in 2018 and give them to Microsoft, Google, and Apple.
One strong competitor, when it comes to the manufacturing of screen displays, is Samsung Display. It is expected that these two Korea-based tech giants will be going head-to-head against one another.
"South Korean panel manufacturers have set the goal of performance of their foldable panels significantly high," a source told the publication. "It will not be too long before they start mass-producing their products after going through a little bit of supplementation."
