iPhone 8 News & Update: Facial Recognition & Augmented Reality Technology Possible To iPhone?
Gloven RamosSeveral news, rumors, and speculations regarding to the Apple's next iPhone 8 features are spreading throughout the internet. Some of these rumors include the addition of the facial recognition and the depth sensor or augmented reality to the new Apple phone.
The Apple's next iPhone 8 could include some facial or gesture recognition technology according to reports. This feature will be supported by a new infrared sensor and the laser sensor attached near the front facing camera of the unit.
As reported by 9To5Mac, Apple has used facial recognition technology in its iOS 10 Photos app, but a facial recognition feature supported by a new laser sensor has not yet been made available for the iPhone, iPad, or Mac. One analyst, Timothy Acuri, shared that the expected iPhone 8 will include a new 5.8-inch model with an OLED wraparound display, facial recognition features, wireless charging and Touch ID embedded in the display.
A depth sensor technology has also been rumored to be in the upcoming iPhone 8, but it is not yet been taken seriously, although Apple CEO Tim Cook has talked about the company's interest in augmented reality technology several times in the past year. "It will be enabled in the operating systems first, because it's a precursor for that to happen for there to be mass adoption of it," he said.
"I'd look for that to happen in the not-too-distant future," he added. "AR is going to take a while, because there are some really hard technology challenges there."
According to a Business Insider report, in 2013, Apple bought an infrared sensor company, the Primesense. They also cited that a new kind of sensor would be critical for Apple to add AR features to upcoming versions of the iPhone.
Apple's next iPhone is expected to launch in September 2017. However, Apple has yet no official announcement about the list of features and other things to expect about iPhone 8.
