The "G.I. Joe" movie franchise never got the box office success "Transformers" received, that is why Director D.J. Caruso had plans to merge the two franchises together in the third installment of "G.I. Joe" according to Comic Book. Caruso stated that before he began the movie, he had talks with Dwayne Johnson, the lead in "G.I. Joe," and the studio regarding the movie's plot.

He thought that there was something missing from the franchise, and that is "Transformers." However, the studio had an unenthusiastic response, stating that they are not ready yet for the two movies to crossover.

Caruso explained that in the future, the studio might make the crossover perhaps until Michael Bay, the director of "Transformers," is done with the franchise. Both movies are under the toy maker Hasbro and a shared movie universe would have competed with other similar crossovers like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Since the "Transformers" franchise is still breaking box office records, the studio wouldn't want to do anything that jeopardizes that success according to SyFy. Michael Bay has been attached with the franchise since it began.

The G.I. Joe live-action movie franchise started in 2009 titled "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" that starred Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In 2013 a sequel was released, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," starred Dwayne Johnson with Bruce Willis and brought back Tatum for a small role. The two films have grossed over $675 million at the worldwide box office.

The third installment of the franchise has been delayed due to Johnson's conflicting schedules and no official announcement has been made regarding its release date.
