'Minecraft': A Bridge To Child Pornography? Gamer Sentenced To More Than 2 Years In Prison
Coco Dollanganger"Minecraft" has attracted millions of children around the world as the game allows them to create their own world through virtual building blocks. However, the "Minecraft" world being created by an isolated 22-year-old gamer wasn't a virtual playground for children to explore their imaginations luring two boys ages 12 and 14 into sexual abuse.
BBC reports that Adam Isaac from Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales has now been jailed for sexually grooming two youngsters and the court sentenced him to two years and eight months in prison. Meeting them on "Minecraft," Isaac asked them sexual questions and requested lewd photos; switching to Skype, Snapchat (where the two boys were asked to send him photos) and text message to continue communicating with the two boys.
In 2015, he was cautioned for possessing a small number of lewd images of children and has been registered as a sex offender, according to the Guardian. Prosecute Rachel Knight said that he bought the two boys presents through PayPal to use in "Minecraft" to win their trust therefore, grooming them.
"There was a significant degree of planning, there was grooming behavior and there was a significant degree of difference in age," Knight said. The issue of online grooming just goes on and on and has been described as one of the major 21st Century child protection challenges that the world is facing, according to the children's charity NSPCC Cymru.
A representative from Microsoft, which owns "Minecraft" said that the company has been always prioritizing a healthy and safe online gaming experience especially when it comes to children. They have provided resources helping parents understand how to keep their kids safe when playing online.
Isaac, on the other hand, has pleaded guilty to one charge of inciting a child in sexual act, five charges of causing child pornography, one charge of possessing lewd images and one charge of engaging in sexual act in the presence of a child.
