Expensive Tag Heuer Smartwatch Sold 3 Times Than Expected; Second Generation Will Release Women's Edition
Regin OlimberioSwiss watchmaker Tag Heuer proved that there is a high-end market that a four-figure smartwatch price tag can capture. The Tag Heuer smartwatch is successful in debunking the myth that a $1,370 smartwatch won't sell.
Tag Heuer is in cloud nine as it sold thrice the number of what was expected. Remember that Apple iWatch tested the same idea of four-figure smartwatches, but yielded lukewarm reception. There was once a $16,100 real gold Apple smartwatch, but the Cupertino-based tech giant decided to scrap the project. Currently, Apple Watch Series 2 sells for an easier $334 tag.
In the case of Tag Heuer, they dubbed the $1,370 Android Wear-powered smartwatch as Tag Connected. The endeavor easily made Tag Heuer capture the market with 56,000 units sold in just over a year of production. According to German website Neue Zurcher Zeitung, the original estimate sale for Tag Connected is just 20,000 due to doubts that the market will bite a four-digit figure.
IBTimes said that Tag Heuer immediately grown confident over Tag Connected sales, prompting the Swiss company to aim for 150,000 units to be sold in 2017. Chief executive Jean-Claude Biver is convinced that a second-generation Tag Connected will help the achieve such steep goal.
The Tag Heuer smartwatch 2 will reportedly sport a contactless payment feature through NFC chip-powered Tag Connected. Furthermore, an accurate GPS, better display and longer battery life are going to be a top draw for Tag Heuer smartwatch. Tag Connected is also going to expand into women-centric market as a smaller version is in the pipeline, replete with new colorful design.
Biver also humbly said that although there is initial success, Tag Heuer is still in the stone age of smartwatch industry. He added that Tag Connected's main ethos is to replicate the success of Tag Heuer mechanical watches that can sell at comfortable average of 100,000 annually.
