With Overwatch's Lunar New Year event now live on all platforms, previous speculations regarding event details have all been confirmed/denied. The latest Overwatch update does, indeed, include new mode, and it's a classic Capture the Flag-style brawl called Capture the Rooster.

As with previous events like Winter Wonderland and Halloween, standard Loot Boxes have been replaced with festive events one. These Lunar Loot Boxes are only available until the event ends, so act fast: sources say there are more than 100 new items up for grabs!

Lunar Loot Boxes and Skins. Express UK reports more than 100 new commemorative items for this Overwatch update, including brand new skins for a bunch of characters. The first teaser for the Overwatch Lunar New Year event showed Mei and D.Va sporting some gorgeous new clothes.

Mei actually gets two new outfits this update: a red Lunar design and a beautiful white-and-gold number. Reinhardt, Roadhog, Tracer, Ana, Winston, Mercy, and Symmetra are just some of the heroes sporting new skins as well. Players can find a handy gallery of all the skins here.

Winston's Journey to the West. Join Winston, Roadhog, Reinhardt, and Zenyatta as they feature in Overwatch's remake of one China's oldest and richest pieces of literature. The comic is a truly breath-taking tapestry illustrated by SHISHIO, which can be viewed here. Make sure to have the sound turned on.

Capture the Rooster. According to Game Spot, this brawl mode is played out on an updated Lijiang Tower. It follows the basic capture-the-flag play structure-and don't worry; the Rooster in this sense is printed on the flag. There's no actual in-game rooster running around.

Adding this type of game mode is actually a huge win for the Overwatch team, considering that Blizzard Entertainment's repeated comments that a capture-the-flag-style game just wouldn't work for this first-person shooter. In the latest developer update video, director Jeff Kaplan even mentions that they "actually gave up on the mode for a while," since the end result "no longer made Overwatch heroes feel like Overwatch heroes."

They made it work, though, and it looks like Capture the Rooster-plus all the extra goodies-is set to make Overwatch: Lunar New Year event an enjoyable one. It ends on February 13, so make sure to fully explore the new update as much as possible.
