‘Vikings' Season 5 Spoilers: Ivar's & Heahmund's Paths 'Will Intersect'; Sigurd's Murder 'Splits The Brothers'

The last episodes of “Vikings” Season 4 featured the unification of the Sons of Ragnar. They might have been different from each other, but their likeness to their late father got them all together. They all had the same objective, which was to avenge Ragnar’s death at the hands of King Aelle and, by proxy, King Ecbert.

Unfortunately, they just would not see each other eye to eye on how to proceed with their revenge plans on “Vikings” Season 5. “They are going to be in conflict with each other,” show creator Michael Hirst told Variety. “Almost immediately after they succeed in revenging their father, they pave the way to, essentially, world war.”

The process toward this impending war was expedited after Ivar, played by Alex Høgh, killed his brother, David Lindström’s Sigurd. His death brought the “Vikings” Season 4 finale body count to three. That said, Hirst has revealed that “Vikings” Season 5 will begin with the burial of Sigurd. “His murder of Sigurd splits the brothers,” he said. “They split up into different camps.”

“He does not recognize constraints,” Hirst told Entertainment Weekly, referring to Ivar. “He is dangerous. He is mad. He is going to be completely unpredictable.”

An interesting “Vikings” Season 5 spoiler is the moment that Ivar and Bishop Heahmund cross paths. Heahmund, played by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, was introduced into the “Vikings” story line in the “Vikings” Season 4 finale. He was conducting funeral services, and the scene was immediately juxtaposed to him having sexual intercourse with the widow, with his sword placed by the bed.

“I needed to give the Saxons a backbone - someone who was as charismatic as Ragnar was and as Ivar is amongst the Vikings,” Hirst added. Bishopes might have been real churchmen back in the era of the Vikings, but Hirst wanted to convey to the audience that "they were also trained warriors.”

Heahmund might be a “fundamentalist Christian,” but Hirst wanted to portray the character also as “a man of great sensuality.” “He is tormented by these two things,” Hirst continued. “You feel, just from this very brief introduction, that somehow his path and Ivar’s will intersect.”
