Nokia is expected to pull the wraps off its new lineup of Windows 8-powered Lumia phones on Sept. 5, one week before Apple's expected unveiling of its next-generation iPhone. The event is less than two weeks away, but Nokia is been very vague regarding what it plans to show off. Some new information, however, might shed some light on the Finnish company's hardware plans.
According to The Verge, citing "sources familiar with the two companies' [Nokia and Microsoft] plans," Nokia plans to unveil two new Lumia phones, dubbed "Arrow" and "Phi" for now. The "Phi" handset is reportedly poised to become the flagship of the Lumia line when it launches.
There have been various rumors of the "Phi" handset circling the Web for a few weeks, touting an exciting spec sheet, but nothing is certain yet. Famous gadgeteer Eldar Murtazin speculated that the slimmed-down Phi handset will feature a large 4.7-inch AMOLED display and a microSD card slot for expandable memory, while other rumors indicated the smartphone may sport LTE connectivity, a dual-core Qualcomm chipset, as well as Nokia's hefty polycarbonate body.
Meanwhile, there is not much to go on when it comes to the "Arrow" handset. There has been a lot of recent speculation regarding a new Lumia device with a 4 or 4.3-inch screen, and The Verge's Tom Warren noted that "Arrow" will come as a mid-range device, and wil be available on AT&T and T-Mobile when the time comes.
AT&T, the nation's second-biggest carrier, reportedly plans to stock Nokia's Phi smartphone as an exclusive device, throwing much of its weight behind it just like it did with the Nokia Lumia 900. It remains to be seen, however, to what extent that marketing will go, and what will come out of it. Despite Nokia, Microsoft, and AT&T putting their best efforts into marketing the Lumia 900, the device still got off to a rather rocky start. Hopefully things will be different with the Phi.
Both "Phi" and "Arrow" are reportedly just temporary monikers for the upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices. The final designs and names of the handsets will most likely be unveiled at the Sept. 5 event.
