A Guide For The True Surround Sound Experience

Cris Xander Juliano

Watching movies in your own home or simply playing video games on your large flat screen TVs can be an enjoyable experience, and having surround sound can be the icing on the cake. With that in mind, here's a guide for bringing an immersive audio experience to your home according to T3.

First of all, surround sound can be achieved through physical speakers that are actually at your sides and behind your back. It can also be achieved with a number of clever audio tricks played by one or two speakers. However, if you want the true experience, you might want to consider the former.

You will encounter terms such as 5.1 or 7.1 when it comes to speakers. It basically means the number of speakers plus a subwoofer, like five speakers plus one subwoofer and seven speakers plus one subwoofer.

In order to achieve surround sound, you need to play media that supports the system. There won't be eight separate channels by simply playing Spotify on a 7.1 speaker so the effect won't be as good. The ideal media to play on these speakers are modern movies and video games. If you prefer to go wireless to avoid having cables trailing all over the place, you may need to pay a little bit more although the sound quality won't be as perfect.

Another term that you might not be familiar with is DTS-HD. It's a lossless surround sound format that works with HDMI and RCA connectors in a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 setup. On the other hand, the Dolby TrueHD is the successor to the more familiar Dolby Digital- both have similar capabilities.

Setting up the speakers on your own home really depends on your budget as well as the space that you have. The most important factor is the set of speakers that will match the AV receiver and other sources that you are using.
