New Sony Xperia Touch Projector Turns Any Surface Into A Touchscreen
Cris Xander JulianoThe Sony Xperia Touch projector was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress trade show 2017 held in Barcelona, Spain. Its unique feature is that it turns any surface into a touchscreen.
CNBC reports that the projector runs Google's Android operating system, which means the device is capable of running apps from the Google Play Store. The device has built-in speakers and small enough to be portable. It's capable of displaying up to 80 inches of screen; however, it loses its touch capabilities once it reaches that length, which is something Sony's trying to improve on.
According to The Verge, the projector will act as a digital hub. Sony created its own user interface that puts information in one place such as calendar events, real-time weather data and a memo board. Users may also access Skype for video chatting from the screen.
The Xperia Touch uses Sony's SXRD projection display technology which detects user's gestures and taps with the uses of infrared sensors and a standard 60fps camera. Similar to an Android tablet, users may browse the web, watch videos or slideshows. It's also capable of working with PS4's Remote Play in which you can play games with the device when someone else is using the TV.
Analysts speculated that the projector will not sell in large quantities due to its $1,587 price tag. It does, however, show Sony's ability to innovate. Ben Wood, chief research at CCS Insight, stated that it was an incredibly ambitious product and Sony should be applauded for having the courage to invest in a completely new area.
Sony will launch the projector in spring beginning in Japan and Europe and later in the US.
