Google: No Future Plans Of Google Branded Laptops, Production Of Pixel Laptops Called Off!
Catherine G.Recently, Google ended the production of its Pixel laptop. The Google Pixel laptop was sent to compete with Apple MacBook Air.
This announcement was made by Rick Osterloh, the senior vice president for hardware at Google during the Mobile World Congress. The MWC is taking place in Barcelona, Spain and Osterloh addressed the issue in a small meeting with tech journalists. He only talked about the Google Pixel notebook after someone asked about the future of the laptop. On behalf of the company, he stated that there are "no plans to do one right now".
Reportedly, he also stated that the versions already existing in the market have already sold out. Google has no plans to manufacture Pixel laptops anymore. However, he clarified that this reference was not being made to the operating system of the notebook. He specified that this announcement only pertained to the hardware and not the ChromeOS.
"Chrome OS is a huge initiative in the company," Osterloh said. "Google hasn't backed away from laptops. We have the number two market share in the U.S. and U.K. - but we have no plans for Google-branded laptops," said Osterloh in continuation.
The Google Chromebook was one of the first devices to carry the Google Pixel tag. This tag was later also used in the most recent flagship phones released by Google. The original Pixel laptops were first launched back in 2013 and were appreciated for the features they offered. The Chromebooks had great design appeal but the operating system was only web based and ran the Chrome browser and a few other cloud-based apps.
The second version was launched in 2015 and cost $999 with a USB-C port. However, it had a limited market due to the operating system and high cost.
