Microsoft Surface Phone 2017 Release Date Seems Highly Unlikely; Here's Why [VIDEO]
Vinay PatelWhile rumors surrounding Microsoft's looming spring event continues pouring in from all corners, some reports claim that a Surface Phone is highly unlikely to even see the light of day this year.
Despite the lack of an official confirmation from Microsoft, the rumor mill has been churning a slew of speculations around the Surface Phone's release date. With Microsoft slated to hold a launch event on May 2 bearing the hashtag #MicrosoftEDU, optimistic fans are keeping their hopes high for a Surface Phone announcement. But, TheChristianPost believes spring might not be the time when Microsoft could opt to spill the beans about its new phone.
Unnamed sources familiar with the matter told ArsTechnica that a Surface Phone won't be coming to fruition at all, which is hardly surprising since the Redmond-based tech behemoth has never specifically mentioned about its plan to launch such a thing. As if that weren't enough, the publication also claimed that the Surface Pro 5 is unlikely to make an appearance at the event as well.
There's hearsay that the upcoming Microsoft event might focus completely on the company's upcoming software product -- the Windows 10 Cloud. While nothing is set in stone yet, zealous tech pundits believe that the device will still be announced before the end of 2017 and hit the store shelves in 2018.
With less than one percent of the world's smartphone market, the Windows Mobile phone is yet to get a radical upgrade. That being said, if Microsoft actually launches the Microsoft Surface Phone then it would mark the tech firm's comeback in the smartphone segment.
However, not too many people are bent on using a Windows Phone, with a majority of people choosing either Android or iOS phones. Taking that into consideration, BlastingNews believes a handset running on a Windows mobile OS is highly unlikely to lure smartphone enthusiasts.
On the brighter side, there have been reports about Microsoft testing a few prototypes of its Surface Phone. This shred of information is said to have come from tried-and-true sources.
One of the prototypes was even reported to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with an 8-core, 2.4-gigahertz specification under the hood. Furthermore, it was said to run the mobile version of Windows 10 operating system.
Aside from that, the Surface Phone prototypes tested packed 6GB of RAM. A 64-bit process was also seen on one of the prototypes. Interestingly, Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella once mentioned about making a mobile device saying the company will continue to be in the phone segment.
