The tech writer Mark Gurman, famed for his detailed Apple-related predictions, says that iOS 18 will be the most significant update in iPhone history. In the Power On email, Gurman noted that this next operating system is considered to be Apple's most significant iOS update ever.

Gurman plans to share more details; however, specific features and changes have yet to be disclosed. The first developer beta of iOS 18 will arrive in June during Apple's WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). The release date for the operating system is September.

iOS 18 is Anticipated to Bring RCS Support and Generative AI Enhancements for Siri and Messages

iOS 18 is drawing the attention of many people since rumors have it that this version for iPhone could be revolutionary. An important feature is the supposed implementation of RCS (Rich Communication Services) support in the Messages app. This feature is expected to be released in 2024, and it would add better quality media, audio messages interface typing indicators, read receipts, and Wi-Fi messaging across phones from iOS and Android.

Group chats, including iPhones and Android users, will likely boost markedly.

Another significant enhancement expected in iOS 18 is the integration of generative AI technology, particularly for Siri and the Messages app. This development will elevate Siri's capabilities in fielding questions and auto-completing sentences. Apple has reportedly explored applying generative AI across various platforms, including Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, and Xcode.

The incorporation of large language models into Siri is set to enable users to automate complex tasks, fostering deeper integration with the Shortcuts app.

With OpenAI's 2022 release of ChatGPT, a chatbot with responses that resembled those of a person, the field of generative AI received impetus. After Google and Microsoft released their versions, the pattern persisted. With the beta scheduled for the annual WWDC in June, iOS 18's ability to include these developments promises a more feature-rich and intuitive user experience, laying the groundwork for an exciting release in September.

Other Anticipated Updates for iOS This Year

Apple is set to implement significant changes in the European Union (EU) to comply with new antitrust laws. Starting in March under the Digital Markets Act, these changes include allowing EU iPhone users to download apps from alternative stores and introducing more payment options.

The iPhone maker argues that such modifications pose substantial risks, including malware, fraud, scams, and privacy concerns for users and developers. While aligning with EU regulations, it signifies a shift in Apple's app distribution and payment strategy.

Security risks related to these changes include challenges in detecting and preventing malicious apps and supporting users affected by issues with apps from outside the App Store.

Apple intends to limit these changes to the EU, emphasizing its commitment to user privacy and security. Alternative app stores within the EU will undergo notarization for malware and virus checks, with acknowledged persisting risks. Developers are expected to continue using the App Store and in-app purchase system as usual outside the EU.

The company's modifications to developer business conditions have faced criticism from Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney and the Coalition for App Fairness, urging the European Commission to reject Apple's proposal.
