Apple is expected to begin the production of AirTag 2 in 2022, with the new model to be unveiled in 2025 as a more advanced tracking device for lost items. It seems that in the new version known as B589 some improvements such as better location tracking, a new chip and several design enhancements should be integrated, local sources reported. This will mark a new generation of the AirTag following a three-year since the first generation AirTag was first released in 2021.
Another thing that has been revealed about the AirTag 2 is its better feature of locating the device. There is a strong belief that in the new device, there is a better chip incorporated better than before, which would enhance the Precision Finding feature.
One of the features of this technology that helps in locating items is the ultra wideband which enables accurate identification of the user's location of items. The enhanced chip could indeed make enhancements to this process, those would offer an even better tracking.
Another report is that the AirTag 2 will not only introduce several technical improvements, but it will also come with a range of design changes based on the criticisms made regarding the original AirTag model. Some of the things that have been mentioned by the users are that the current AirTag is scratch prone and also needs other accessories for attaching a key or a bag. There are speculations claiming that the next generation will come with a stronger built, firmed construction, and possibly it would have a hole for a key ring. This could remove the need for additional peripherals, and the general utility of such a device would improve considerably.

A significant aspect of the AirTag 2 is its expected integration with Apple's upcoming Vision Pro headset. This integration suggests a push towards a more cohesive spatial computing ecosystem. Ming-Chi Kuo about industry predictions claims that the new AirTag could implement augmented reality (AR) which will be facilitated by Vision Pro to help the user to find the item more efficiently in close proximity. This AR functionality could enable positional data to be overlaid on the user's field of view by virtue of the headset.
Among these, the Vision Pro which is still under development and will be launched in 2024 is expected to be a key player in this market. This combination of the AirTag 2 and the Vision Pro could be an apt representation of what Apple has long hailed as a departure between virtual and real spaces. It would extend the capabilities of the AirTag while simultaneously repurpose the Vision Pro for something beyond its more conventional uses in AR applications.
The postponing of the AirTag 2 release to mid-2025 has allowed Apple Adequate time to work on its security features, which it did upgrade after being accused of misuse. Originally, when AirTag was introduced, there were releases alleging use of the device in tracking individuals without authorization. In response, Apple has introduced several security updates. The upcoming AirTag 2 is expected to incorporate further advancements to combat misuse effectively.
Apple's commitment to enhancing security is also reflected in the broader market context. With the rollout of iOS 17.5, Apple introduced built-in detection for unwanted location trackers, allowing iPhone users to detect third-party trackers in addition to AirTags. This feature aligns with a joint specification developed by Apple and Google aimed at preventing the misuse of Bluetooth tracking devices.
The broader tracking device market has seen significant developments this year. Competitors like Chipolo and Pebblebee have introduced new products compatible with Google's Find My Device network, launched in April. This network provides Android users with a crowd-sourced solution similar to Apple's Find My network for locating lost devices. The increasing competition underscores the need for Apple to innovate and enhance its AirTag offerings.
While the wait for the AirTag 2 continues, the forthcoming device promises to deliver substantial improvements over its predecessor. From better accuracy in tracking to its enhanced construction and compatibility with Apple Vision Pro glasses, the AirTag 2 could be setting higher standards for personal tracker gadgets. The company is planning to launch the device for mass production in 2024, so consumers can expect a new generation tracker that not only covers the drawbacks of previous models but also brings the advancement in the technology to make the device have new features.
For now, the current AirTag remains a robust option for users, providing reliable tracking at a competitive price point. With the AirTag 2's release still on the horizon, Apple enthusiasts can continue to utilize the existing model without concern of imminent obsolescence.
