While Nokia is having problems sorting out the Lumia 920 supply, Amazon is busy making the HTC 8X freely available for willing Verizon subscribers and those who have no problems switching networks.
On AT&T, the HTC 8X (8GB) is going for $99 on contract, so this Amazon deal can be seen as a steal for consumers; however, it comes with a catch that many may not find too pleasing. The catch is that one would have to wait a couple weeks before the handset is shipped to them, but considering it's free, there shouldn't be too many complaints regarding this move.
If certain consumers are not inclined to wait, they can purchase the same handset for $39.99, or the 16GB version for $49.99. All devices are cheaper than the more popular Nokia Lumia 920, so for those who just want a Windows Phone 8 device without all the hardware bells and whistles and just the software, the HTC 8X is more than good enough.
Compared to the Lumia 920, the HTC 8X is lighter and feels better in the hands, according to reviewers. It doesn't come packed with new hardware features and killer Nokia-exclusive applications, but that should not matter much when the device is being made available for free.
It would be interesting to see how HTC responds to Nokia in 2013. Wouldn't it be awesome if the company announced the HTC Titan 3 at CES 2013? Such a phone could tip the balance in HTC's favor, and finally give Nokia some well needed competition from Windows Phone OEMs.
