CES 2013 seen has seen an influx of smartphones all of which are vying for their moment in the sun. Alcatel took to the CES 2013 to announce its new line-up of One Touch smartphones for 2013, including the One Touch Idol Ultra, which is touted as the "world's slimmest smartphone."
"The ALCATEL ONE TOUCH brand has grown exponentially since entering the U.S. market eight years ago," noted Nicolas Zibell, President, Americas & Pacific for ALCATEL ONE TOUCH. "And with the launch of our new smartphone collection we plan to take things to the next level."
Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra, the company's flagship device for 2013, is 6.45mm thin and edges out the 6.55mm thick BBK Vivo X1, which held the distinction of being the thinnest smartphone previously.
The One Touch Idol Ultra sports a 4.7-inch HD AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. Under the hood, the smartphone packs in a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM.
In a bid to make the Idol Ultra as svelte as possible, Alcatel chose to bypass the microSD card slot, which is a bit of a downer considering the power-hungry device has only 8GB of on-board storage available. The smartphone also features an 8-megapixel primary camera (1080p video) and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing snapper. The smartphone will come pre-loaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
"These mobile devices represent a small portion of the Android smartphones that the company will bring to market globally in 2013, and that will be brought to the public eye for the very first time at CES," said Nicolas Zibell.
The One Touch Idol Ultra is slated to hit the shelves in China in January and will cost RMB 2,799 (about $449). However, the smartphone will not hit the U.S. anytime soon and it looks like the "world's thinnest smartphone" title has come at a price for the company. Per reports , Alcatel (which is not related to Alcatel-Lucent) apparently could not get the FCC to approve the device because of its thin profile.
