Amid repeated reports of possible release of PlayStation 4 in the coming weeks, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai hinted that the company may not reveal PS4 unless Microsoft unveils Xbox 720. Hirai seems to be in no hurry to unveil the next-gen PlayStation and defiantly, does not want to give its competitors a chance to come up with something better.
"Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?," Sony Chief said in a recent interview with The Times (via IGN). According to recent rumors, Sony was speculated to make an official announcement on the system as early as March and some said the console will hit shelves in June.
Talking to a Spanish Web site last week, Sony's vice president of home entertainment, Hiroshi Sakamoto had confirmed that PlayStation 4 will see an official release at or before this years' E3 Gaming Expo.
However, Hirai's concerns about the possibility of his rival changing the specs of its console based on Sony's designs are highly doubtful at this point in time. However, his statement does indicate that the company isn't ready to rush its process to get ahead of Microsoft's Xbox 720 release. Moreover, the wait would give Sony ample amount of time to come up a device that can clean its reputation for poorly managing its console releases.
Meanwhile, the hype around PlayStation 4 console is rapidly growing that rumors show no sign of dying down. Below are some of the latest rumored PlayStation 4 specs as we reported previously:
- AMD eight-core 1.6GHz CPU
- Radeon HD graphics card (possibly a modified version of the 7970M)
- 1.84 TFLOPS
- "Secret sauce" compute module
- CPU component could be 75 to 80 mm2
- 4GB of GDDR5 ultra-fast RAM
- 512MB RAM reserved for the operating system
- 100GB Blu-ray disc drive
