Nikon has introduced a slew of new Coolpix compact cameras to be launched in February, sporting a range of features, designs, and colors.
Super-telephoto and zoom compacts, rugged models for adventurous photographers, as well as cameras packing both Wi-Fi and GPS join Nikon's line-up. The cameras will reportedly be available from various retailers when they launch in February.
Four of the new models - the S9500, S9400, S31, and S5200 - will join the company's S-Series, as their names suggest. All four cameras sport various features, each of them offering something new.
The S9500 model brings integrated Wi-Fi and 22x optical zoom, as well as GPS, while the lower model, the S9400, is a more basic camera with 18x zoom, a 3-inch display, and a backlit CMOS sensor.
The S31, meanwhile, is aimed more at the adventurous user as it is able to withstand temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit, water submersion up to 5 meters (16.4 feet). The S31 also sports a shockproof body able to handle drops from up to 1.2 meters (about 4 feet). The fourth model in the S series, the S5200, packs slightly lower specs with a 6x optical zoom, but comes with a slim body. It also has a backlit CMOS sensor and a 26mm-wide angle lens.
Nikon has also expanded its line-up with two rugged compacts - the AW110 and AW110s - both of which are available in a range of colors: blue, orange, silver, black, and a camouflage style.
Both of these compacts are designed for outdoor use in rough environments, which makes them suitable for adventurous photographers. Both the AE100 and AW110s sport integrated Wi-Fi, 16-megapixel sensors, and just like the S31 model, both can withstand temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Both cameras work underwater, sport an altimeter, depth gauge, and atmospheric pressure display, and both have a 3-inch screen. The AW110, however, adds GPS for point-of-interest data.
Nikon also added three entry-level cameras to its L-series: the L820, L28, and L27. The L820 is a super-zoom model with 30x optical zoom and a 16-megapixel backlit sensor, and it will be available in black, red, blue, and plum. The L28 and L27 are smaller compacts, with the L28 sporting a 3-inch display and 20 megapixels, and the L27 offering a slightly smaller 2.7-inch display and 16 megapixels.
The Nikon Coolpix P520, however, stands out the most. It is a super-zoom digital camera with a 42x optical zoom. The Coolpix P520 packs a 24mm-wide angle lens, a vari-angle 3.2-inch display, lens-shift vibration reduction which reduces blurs, and an 18-megapixel CMOS sensor. The model also sports GPS, as well as support for recording 1080p HD videos. The P520 also works with the Wireless Mobile Adapter WU-1a, which is available separately.
