LG has been making quite a name for itself in the Android smartphone world lately. It was chosen by Google to build its latest flagship smartphone, the Nexus 4. A new rumor claims that LG is planning to release another flagship smartphone later this year. The LG Optimus G2 will reportedly ship with an eight-core "Odin" processor built by LG.
According to DDaily, a South Korean publication, LG is hard at work on creating its very own 8-core processor and it will ship later this year inside of the LG Optimus G2. The processor is currently going by the codename "Odin" and is believed to feature four Cortex A15 cores for processor intensive applications and four Cortex A7 cores for tasks that don't need the extra power. LG has reportedly designed the chip to provide power lifting when necessary but also improves battery life by using the Cortex A7 cores when the smartphone doesn't need that extra boost. The SoC (system on a chip) will also pack in eight-core graphics capabilities and support full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and higher.
LG appears to be getting more serious and competitive in the smartphone world with each new smartphone it releases. Its sights are obviously set on going head to head with Samsung and Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor, with this new processor of its own. Smartphone makers are no longer waiting for chip suppliers to innovate and are taking on the task of building in-house chips custom-designed for their smartphones. Samsung, Apple and now LG are taking matters into their own hands and building chips exclusively for their smartphones and tablets.
