Last year we reported that Instagram was on its way to Windows Phone, and that the popular image editing app could begin life on platform as a Nokia Lumia exclusive. Now it appears it could really happen, all due to a recent rumor. Chinese website, WPDang, reported the information after being tipped off by someone claiming to be close to what is going on. The app is in development and testing, and should soon find its place in the Windows Phone Store under the Nokia section.
Apparently, Instagram will not be available to those without a Lumia handset that is running Windows Phone 8, which is a real shame. To recompense for being late to the Windows Phone platform, the developers plan to add a filter not found on iOS or Android. Time will tell if an additional filter will be enough to win the love of Lumia branded Windows Phone 8 owners, still, we have a feeling it doesn't matter one bit.
It is difficult to tell if this rumor is true or not, for all we know, the tipster could be pulling our leg. If true however, it would have been a lot better if the app wasn't exclusive to Nokia devices. After all, we'd like to think Windows Phone is far more important than Nokia, and no one OEM should have this much control over the platform.
Currently, the Windows Phone store has surpassed 130,000. However, many of the popular applications are still missing. This poses a problem for those Android and iOS users who might feel compelled to make the switch, but are unable to do so since the apps they use are not available. As the platform grows, expect more popular applications to find their way to Windows Phone, as developers would have more incentive to support it.
