Everybody likes to unlock a new handset to allow it to do more and HTC One is no different. However, everything comes with a certain price and, again, HTC One is no different.
Those who are willing to unlock the HTC One bootloader in the near future should keep in mind that once the unlocking process is in order, the phone is configured in such a way that it will erase several of its apps, according to reports.
Normally, if anyone has ever unlocked a bootloader on a device before, they will know that it wipes the data partition, and it is not really that a big deal as long as the user is aware of it.
However, the HTC One operates in a slightly different way, and there are a number of applications (like Calculator, Flashlight, Ringtone Trimmer and Sound Recorder) that are not in the main system partition, but are instead installed after a factory reset from a preload directory that lives in the data partition.
MoDaCo states: “Unfortunately, HTC haven't taken this preload directory into account in the bootloader unlock process - it gets wiped out and in turn those four system applications are gone... permanently!”
Basically, the issue mentioned here is with a handful of apps that are stored in a preload directory on the HTC One’s data partition. Later, during a factory reset, that directory’s left alone, but unlocking the handset has no such restriction, and will that remove the data partition clean of these files.
The end result will be that this will leave the One without its Calculator, Flashlight, Ringtone Trimmer, and Sound Recorder apps.
“Another potentially even more serious side effect is that because the OTA files check the integrity of existing applications, future OTAs won't apply if you've completed the unlock. The only way back from this situation is going to be a RUU (when one becomes available) - which will wipe your device again,” the report adds.
The last time when the HTC One unlocked bootloader was in news was when it was reported that HTC had revealed the Developer Edition of the newly revealed HTC One, and that the device would soon be made available to the U.S. residents for $649.
