With the eventual and highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S4 release out of the way, the Samsung-based Tizen is back in news and now there is more to follow up for anyone actually looking forward to it.
Samsung now has actually revealed some details about the upcoming Tizen hardware and has also shared a few dates for fans to look forward to it, according to reports.
According to Samsung executive Lee Young Hee, fans should see the first Tizen hardware in August or September, and that could mean that Samsung is actually planning to launch this Tizen-based device at the IFA.
“The Tizen phone will be out in August or September, and this will be in the high-end category,” Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said during an interview in Seoul, according to a Bloomberg report. “The device will be the best product equipped with the best specifications.”
Another thing that’s perhaps more interesting here is that unlike what the fans are seeing at the moment from new platforms like Firefox OS and others, Samsung’s Tizen phone should be comparatively high-end.
According to Chase Perrin, an official with the San Ramon, California- based Tizen Association, via an email to Bloomberg, although there are no Tizen devices sold globally, the first users will have a boatload (thousands to be precise) of applications to choose from.
“Android, among other mobile operating systems, is tightly controlled,” Perrin said. “As an open-source software platform, Tizen is designed to make it easy to develop for a range of devices.”
On the other hand, however, Doh Hyun Woo, an analyst for Seoul-based Mirae Asset Securities, thinks that while Samsung's Tizen phone is just an insurance policy or a safety net for now, it may turn totally opposite if Google manages to dominate the market just like Microsoft did in the PC market with more than 90 percent share.
“The model will be one of at least three premium handsets released by Samsung this year -- including the Galaxy S4 unveiled yesterday and a new Galaxy Note -- to compete with Apple Inc. and Chinese producers in a slowing market,” the report adds.
“Samsung is among 12 companies, including Intel Corp. (INTC) and Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), developing Tizen as an alternative to Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android, which runs two of every three smartphones worldwide.”
