Sony is gearing up to launch a number of new smartphones, but the Sony Xperia ZL just broke a new Guinness World Record.
It's not for the fastest phone, nor the most resistant, nor anything like that. Sony Mobile is now a Guinness World Record holder as the company managed to create the world's largest animated mobile phone mosaic, made up entirely by Sony Xperia ZL handsets.
Back at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013, which took place on Feb. 25 - 28 in Barcelona, Spain, Sony arranged 196 Xperia ZL smartphones in a unique mosaic that measured 3 feet and 2 inches by 3 feet and 4 inches. The company arranged the mosaic in a 14 by 14 grid and managed to sync all 196 phones to create one large display.
In case you didn't know a Guinness World Record for "the largest animated mobile phone mosaic" exists, now you do. The new title holder is Sony Mobile's Sony Xperia ZL, and it's unlikely that anyone will break its record anytime soon.
It may not seem like much, but it's still a neat achievement for a handset that is just becoming available around the world. The Sony Xperia ZL is already available in select European markets and should arrive in the U.S. soon, challenging rivals in the high-end smartphone market. Canada and India are also preparing to welcome the handset.
It's also worth noting that Sony mentions in its blog post that it used Xperia Z smartphones for the mosaic, but the Guinness website says the units were actually Xperia ZL handsets. The available photos confirm that the phones in the mosaic are indeed Sony Xperia ZL, as this handset has a narrower bezel compared to the Xperia Z model.
For those unfamiliar with Sony's new powerhouse, the Sony Xperia ZL sports a Full HD 5-inch touch screen display with a whopping pixel density of 443 pixels per inch (ppi). It packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor clocked at 1.5GHz under the hood, backed up by 2GB of RAM. The handset currently rocks Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, with an update to the latest 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system slated for the near future.
