Barnes & Noble is apparently on a roll and its Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets are now getting price cuts as part of a one-week offer.
After announcing that the Google Play store and its 700,000+ apps will finally be available for its tablets, Barnes & Noble announced a special one-week-only sale for Mother's Day.
Under this special offer, the 7-inch Nook HD now costs $149 for the entry-level 8GB model, which normally costs $199, while the 9-inch Nook HD+ starts at $179 for the 16GB model, down from the regular price tag of $269. Both tablets offer expandable memory via a micro SD card slot. The lower prices are available online at Barnes & Noble bookstores and on Nook.com. Interested buyers can also benefit from this offer by purchasing Nook tablets from Target and Best Buy.
"In recognition that the best gift for Mother's Day is now even better we're proud to offer this special limited-time offer for our award-winning 7- and 9-inch tablets," said NOOK Media President Jamie Iannone in the press release. "NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ are not only beautifully designed, lightweight devices with stunning displays, they now offer customers the most reading and entertainment content we've ever offered, at the best prices ever."
The offer stands until May 12, Mother's Day, and the new price cuts are likely to appeal to more customers, especially now that Google Play is on board. While Mother's Day is a notable occasion, Barnes & Noble might also be aiming to get rid of some of its Nook HD and Nook HD+ inventory. The company did not announce any updates to its hardware, but it could make some updates, at least a speed bump, later this year.
Amazon, meanwhile, is expected to update its Kindle Fire lineup ahead of the holiday shopping season at the latest. The new price cuts from Barnes & Noble might even prompt Amazon to take action as well. A few months ago, for instance, Amazon lowered the price of its 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD to $299 (from $269) to match the price of the Nook HD+.
