Alexandra Burlacu

Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry has unveiled a new BlackBerry 10 device at its BlackBerry Live 2013 event - the BlackBerry Q5 - aimed at emerging markets.

The new BlackBerry Q5 is a full QWERTY entry-level smartphone, previously leaked as the BlackBerry R10. The smartphone aims to cater the affordable segment, but carries a wide range of features.

The entry-level device will add another choice for BlackBerry fans, but this time on a budget. The smartphone sports a display size similar to the one of the BlackBerry Q10, with a resolution of 720 x 720. The display of the BlackBerry Q5 however, is HD LCD, while the higher-end BlackBerry Q10 sports an AMOLED display.

Under the hood, the BlackBerry Q5 packs a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 8GB of internal storage and BlackBerry 10.1 running the show. The device also packs a 2,100 mAh battery, which is non-removable. In terms of ports and connectivity, the BlackBerry Q10 features a micro USB port, micro SD card slot for expandable memory, Wi-Fi, GPS, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

"BlackBerry is excited to bring a new BlackBerry QWERTY smartphone, the BlackBerry Q5, to our customers in selected markets around the world," BlackBerry President and CEO Thorsten Heins touts in the press release. "The BlackBerry Q5 gives you the best of everything with its cutting-edge BlackBerry 10 functionality and a physical QWERTY keyboard. It is our youthful fans that are passionate, confident and bold, and it makes it easy for them to have fun, create, share and stay connected."

The low-cost BlackBerry Q10 also comes with dual cameras - a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter. The handset will be available in black, white, red and pink, and will launch sometime in early July. The BlackBerry Q10 is headed toward selected markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Under "Pricing and Availability," the press release notes the selected markets to get the new BlackBerry Q5 smartphone, but makes no actual mention of pricing. The handset is, however, expected to come with an affordable price tag, as it is an entry-level smartphone.
