HP just introduced its first device to rock Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 4 mobile processor, as well as Android 4.2 Jelly Bean - the HP Slatebook x2.
Just like the popular ASUS Transformer series, the HP Slatebook x2 will be a convertible Android tablet that docks into a keyboard to provide a full laptop experience. This is HP's second try at an Android tablet, but it definitely seems more promising this time.
The HP Slatebook x2 sports a 10.1-inch display with a 1,920 x 1,200 resolution and ships with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on board. It will also boast Nvidia's Tegra 4 mobile processor when it debuts in August with a $480 price tag.
In terms of design, the Slatebook x2 looks quite similar to HP's Windows 8 tablet - the Envy X2. The power and volume buttons are located on the back of the tablet, near the left and right edges. Instead of brushed aluminum, however, the new Slatebook has a cheaper-looking plastic chassis.
Like many Windows 8 convertibles, the Slatebook x2 packs a full-size keyboard dock and touch pad so users can also enjoy a laptop experience. The keyboard features a full HDMI port, USB 2.0, an SD slot and an audio port. The dock will also pack an additional battery to complement the one already included in the slate. The slate itself features a front-facing HD shooter and a 2-megapixel rear-facing camera. Quite poor, but it'll do the trick. Maximum storage capacity is 64GB, with a micro SD card slot included for additional memory.
Nvidia's Tegra 4 and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean are definitely the most impressive strengths of this tablet. On the other hand, even if the HP Slatebook x2 has plenty to offer in terms of specs and features, $480 may still seem quite expensive to many. The new HP Android convertible is expected to arrive sometime in August, but it remains unclear at this point whether the $480 price tag includes the keyboard dock as well. If it does, the price just got more acceptable and might convince plenty of consumers to ditch their laptops and opt for this tablet instead.
