Is the Galaxy S4 the best-selling Samsung smartphone of all time? That's what it looks like going by the recent Samsung announcement. Over 6 million Galaxy S4 devices were shipped to retailers since it went on sale two weeks ago, so to think the device is the fastest selling Samsung smartphone of all time is not difficult to believe.
Samsung co-CEO, Shin Jong-kyun, said that sales of the Galaxy S4 to retailers would likely surpass 10 million units by this week, according to a report from the Korea Times. He went on to note the Galaxy S4 is selling much faster than the Galaxy S3, which only managed to reach the 10 million mark in 50 days. The Galaxy S4 should hit that same milestone in less than a month.
"We are confident that we will pass more than 10 million sales of the S4 next week. It is selling much faster than the previous model S3," Samsung Electronics co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun told reporters at an industry forum in Seoul, Thursday.
The Galaxy S4 is Samsung's latest flagship device that competes directly with the HTC One, Nokia Lumia 920, and Apple iPhone 5. Samsung launched the handset to much fanfare, and while the design does not come off as graceful compared to other competing devices, the Galaxy S4 still manages to grab the mindshare of many smartphone users around the world.
According to Strategy Analytics (SA), Samsung is responsible for 95 percent of Android profits this year. This makes Samsung more important to Google than Google to Samsung, an interesting turn of events.
"An efficient supply chain, sleek products and crisp marketing have been among the main drivers of Samsung's impressive profitability," said SA analyst Woody Oh.
"We believe Samsung generates more revenue and profit from the Android platform than Google does," said SA's executive director Neil Mawston. SA said LG Electronics generated 2.5 percent of Android profit during the first quarter.
