Phablets have become popular due to the Samsung Galaxy Note line of devices, so it is no surprise that every other company wants to hop onto the bandwagon. The latest rumor is that Nokia is working on a new phablet and if the rumor turns out to be true, we'll be seeing a Lumia-branded phablet sometime in 2014.
According to a report from DigiTimes, the rumored Nokia Lumia phablet will have a massive 6-inch display, which seems the correct way to go since by all phablet devices look to be 6-inches or more. You might be wondering, why hasn't Nokia come up with a phablet till now, and why would the company wait until 2014 to do so. Well, since the company has placed all its bets on the Windows Phone platform, it can only deliver the things the platform is capable of doing, and right now, Windows Phone lacks support for devices with 5-inch displays and higher.
However, support for bigger screen sizes is on the horizon with the Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update that is scheduled for a late 2012 release. There has also been rumors that the new update would bring to the table a third column of medium sized tiles; this would definitely open the door for larger screen devices in the future.
Furthermore, DigiTimes is also reporting that another OEM is working on a new phablet. The OEM in question is Huawei and, according to the report; the company is working on a phablet with a huge 6.5-inch display: "Additionally, Huawei is also considering developing a 6.5-inch smartphone, the sources said, adding that other handset vendors are likely to follow in Huawei's footsteps and bump up development of 6-inch and larger handsets ".
It is not yet certain which one of the operating systems would be at the heart of this device, or if it would ever the see the light of day outside of Asia. What we do know is this, phablets and smartphones in general are getting bigger, and it could be time for men to begin carrying around a handbag.
