Apple quietly updated its iPod Touch lineup on Thursday, May 30, launching a new 16GB fifth-generation model with a $229 price tag.
The new iPod Touch comes as an addition to Apple's lineup of fifth-generation iPod Touch players and comes without a rear camera. It replaces the fourth-generation iPod Touch that Apple continued to sell even after it launched new models late last year.
The new 16GB iPod Touch is only available with a black and silver back and is now available in Apple's online store. The new gadget should hit Apple retail stores starting Friday, May 31.
Apple unveiled the redesigned fifth-generation iPod Touch last September, sporting the same 4-inch Retina display found on the iPhone 5, as well as other enhancements. Apple decided to continue offering fourth-generation iPod Touch models at lower prices at the time: $199 for the 16GB version and $249 for the 32GB model. With the launch of the 16GB fifth-generation iPod Touch, however, Apple apparently decided to discontinue that older model. The new 16GB model is now the cheapest of new models, priced at $229.
The new model, first spotted by The Verge, packs a dual-core A5 chip and comes with a pair of Apple EarPods, but, as previously mentioned, it does not have a rear camera. It expands Apple's latest generation of iPods into 16GB offerings, since the lineup initially launched with just 32GB and 64GB storage configurations last year.
At this point, the 16GB fifth-generation iPod Touch represents the cheapest option for an Apple device with FaceTime, calling and apps, except for the fact that this model does not include telephony. The new 16GB model is also lighter than its more expensive siblings, dropping its weight to 3.04 ounces due to the lack of a rear camera. Apple launched the fifth-generation iPod Touch back in September 2012 with 32GB and 64GB options, just as it did with the third-generation iPod Touch. All other generations, meanwhile, were available in smaller capacities down to 8GB.
Aside from the lack of a rear-facing camera, another notable absence on the 16GB fifth-generation iPod Touch is the "loop" wrist strap Apple introduced in fifth-generation models last year. The new model is available for order now from Apple's online store, with shipping promised within 24 hours.
