In a recent Google + post, the Google Glass team made a statement regarding the much talked about facial recognition feature that could possibly find its way into the device, either by an app or Google itself. The team said it is listening closely to feedback, and will wait a while before incorporating facial recognition features into Glass at this time.
The biggest concerns facing Google Glass right now, is the possibility of developers creating facial recognition apps for the device. An application developer known as Lambda Labs, is already at the forefront with a facial recognition app that is targeted for Google Glass, however, we do not know to want extent the facial recognition feature will work.
Not too long after the Lambda Labs announcement, Google came out with a statement claiming it will not approve any Google Glass application at this time that focuses on facial recognition. Google plans to put in place strong privacy protections before anything related to facial recognition can be implanted.
"We've been listening closely to you, and many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass. As Google has said for several years, we won't add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place. With that in mind, we won't be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time."
For now, Google is playing it safe, but whenever Google comes up with a solid privacy protection plan, you can expect the company to incorporate facial recognition into the software shortly after. Furthermore, what could stop hackers from getting facial recognition software running on Glass if they so desire? While Google is able to control what type of application gets on Glass via the store, the company would not be able to block those who are willing to go the route of illegal activities.
At the end of the day, anyone wearing Google Glass in the future could be running some form of facial recognition app that has not been approved by Google, and we won't be able to tell who the Glasshole is.
