Sony has refreshed its Xperia smartphone lineup with the launch of the Sony Xperia M handset, which will come in two versions: single- and dual-SIM.
The two versions of the Sony Xperia M come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board, which should allow Sony to better compete in the ever-growing smartphone market. The single-SIM version is basically a regular smartphone, while the dual-SIM model will allow users to easily separate work from personal matters.
"Consumers looking for their first steps into the world of Xperia smartphones would be well-advised to look at Xperia M or Xperia M Dual," Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications said in the press release. "Both models benefit from Sony's proven innovation and engineering expertise, and are perfect for those who want the premium technology and experiences often associated with high-end profiles."
Blather aside, the Sony Xperia M does seem to pack some decent-enough specs. The 4-inch TFT touchscreen display has a modest resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, while under the hood the handset packs a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, Adreno 305 graphics and 1GB of RAM. Nothing spectacular, but it's not so bad either. Connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G with HSPA and NFC.
In terms of camera, the Sony Xperia M has a 5-megapixel rear camera with an Exmor RS sensor, capable of capturing 720p HD videos, as well as a 0.3-megapixel front shooter for video chats and "selfies." The handset packs only 4GB of internal storage, but it does have a micro SD card slot for additional memory.
The Sony Xperia M will come in four color options: black, purple and white, while Sony also promises a yellow single-SIM version. The Xperia M also boasts color-changing illuminations that users can customize to get visual alerts of incoming calls, alarms and texts.
When it comes to pricing and availability, Sony Mobile mentions that the Sony Xperia M and Xperia Mdual will hit the market in the third quarter of this year, but offers no pricing details yet. The company will most likely provide more information closer to launch. Meanwhile, check out these videos (1, 2) to see the smartphone in action.
