Sprint is currently pushing out an update to its Samsung Galaxy S4, adding a few notable features such as apps-to-SD and Knox support.
The MF9 update is rolling out over-the-air (OTA) and weighs 375MB. It should be available to users that still run the default, unrooted firmware. Those with custom firmware, meanwhile, may either go back to factory settings or wait until their ROM provider adds the new featured to the custom firmware in question.
Several owners of the Sprint Galaxy S4 (SPH-L720) reported receiving the update already. The most notable new feature brings the smartphone on par with its European version, allowing users to move apps on the SD card.
Samsung faced a lot of criticism for the free storage space that is actually available to users, which is considerably less than the advertised free space. Before this update, users had no easy way of moving apps to the SD card. Considering that Galaxy S4 owners didn't have much storage at their disposal and most gaming titles, for instance, require hefty amounts of storage, this issue was quite pressing.
Another neat addition is Samsung Knox, a security suite that allows users to separate their personal and business data. This feature, however, may lock the bootloader once the device gets the update. So far, this matter has not been confirmed. The update also brings Smart Pause toggle in the notification panel, a status bar transparency panel that works with custom wallpapers as well, Briefing and SPDclient apps and more.
Samsung Galaxy S4 owners on Sprint should get the OTA update very soon, if they haven't received it already. Other mobile carriers that offer the Samsung Galaxy S4 have yet to announce their respective updates for the handset. If Sprint is already rolling out its software update for the smartphone, other operators should follow suit soon enough.
The European version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 got a similar update last month, allowing users to move apps to the external SD card in order to free up storage on the phone. That particular software update, however, did not include the Samsung Knox security suite.
