LG announced the "world's slimmest Full HD LCD panel," a 5.2-inch 1080p touch screen that is expected to launch on the LG G2.
The new panel uses LG Display's Advanced One-Glass-Solution(OGS) which, according to the company, enables an enhanced touch screen experience. The panel boasts a brightness of 535 nits at its maximum.
"The new panel's superiority in displaying resolution, brightness, and contrast ratio results in enhanced outdoor readability," LG touts in the press release on Thursday, July 11. "And with a brightness of 535 nits at maximum, LG Display's panel outperforms all current mobile Full HD LCD panels."
"Today's introduction of the world's slimmest Full HD LCD panel represents an exciting advancement for the high-end smartphone segment, and is possible due to our world-class expertise in IPS and touch technologies," adds Dr. Byeong-Koo Kim, vice president and head of LG Display's IT and Mobile Development Group. "LG Display will continue its commitment to developing products that maximize consumer value as well as opening new doors for the mobile and tablet PC industry."
The company further claims that its latest Full HD LCD panel can deliver maximum performance even outdoors, in strong sunlight.
While LG's press release makes no mention of the upcoming Optimus G2, Korean website Yonhap News claims that the new smartphone will boast this 5.2-inch Full HD display. Considering that the LG G2 will launch as the company's new flagship, it would make sense for LG to use the smartphone launch as an opportunity to introduce its new panel.
This possibility sounds even more exciting as the upcoming Google Nexus 5 will reportedly be based on the hardware platform of the LG G2. Last year, LG made the popular Google Nexus 4 based on its own Optimus G smartphone, and the two handsets shared specifications. This would mean that if the LG G2 launches with the world's thinnest 5.2-inch Full HD LCD panel, the Nexus 4 successor could rock the same display.
The LG Optimus G2 will make its debut next month at an event scheduled for Aug. 7 in New York City. The company is yet to announce whether the G2 will sport this new display, but there's a good chance that it will.
