Chromecast sees overwhelming demand, Google ends free Netflix deal

Alexandra Burlacu

Google announced its $35 Chromecast streaming dongle with three months' worth of Netflix, but that promotion is already over.

While nobody expected the free Netflix promotion to last forever, few imagined it would vanish so quickly. As it turns out, Google enjoyed such an overwhelming success with its new offering that it has already reached a limit.

"Please note that the Netflix promotional offer (which was available in limited supply) has now ended," Google announced on the Google Play Chromecast order page. "Orders placed between 1PM PST on 7/25 will receive their promotion code once their order ships," added the company.

Some may be puzzled by the very brief time this promotion was available, but on the other hand it is understandable. Getting a Google streaming device with three months of free Netflix access naturally attracted plenty of interested buyers and the demand was apparently higher than what Google was prepared to face. The company previously tried to take over the living room with its Google TV, but that effort was nowhere near as successful as this one.

Google unveiled Chromecast less than a week ago, on July 24. Chromecast is a neat little dongle that plugs into any HDTV via the HDMI slot, allowing users to stream content from their mobile devices via Wi-Fi. The dongle is platform-neutral, which means that it works with any Android, iOS or Windows device. Chromecast currently works with Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Music and Google Play Music & TV, with more apps such as Pandora to arrive soon.

According to AllThingsD, Google bought a certain amount of Netflix subscriptions to offer in bundles with the new Chromecast, but underestimated the demand of its new gadget. Interested buyers currently have to wait between two and three weeks for a Chromecast, and the free Netflix offer is now off the table, at least if you get the device from Google.

Best Buy is still offering the Netflix deal and has an estimated arrival date of Aug. 2-6. Judging by Google's move, those interested in getting some free Netflix with Chromecast would better hurry before this offer expires as well. Amazon, meanwhile, already lists the device as out of stock. Interested buyers, however, can still place an order and wait to be notified when the device becomes available again.
