LG is apparently planning to take another shot at the tablet market with an upcoming G Pad slate, which will reportedly pack a Snapdragon 800 chipset.
After an intriguing report surfaced last week about an upcoming LG G Pad tablet, a new report from the company's home country of South Korea now seems to validate that earlier speculation.
The Korea Herald has far more credibility than the previous report, and the publication now claims to have received relevant information on the upcoming LG tablet from unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
LG reportedly plans to enter production for its upcoming G Pad as early as next month, with an initial trial run of 500 prototypes. The company is later expected to produce between 100,000 and 200,000 units per month. The amount of units made per month will vary according to demand for the tablet.
While LG has made a name for itself in the smartphone world with successful handsets such as the Optimus G, Google Nexus 4 and now the LG G2, the company is yet to leave a significant footprint in the tablet area.
LG is expected to unveil its new G Pad slate in a few weeks at the IFA 2013 trade show in Berlin, but the company has not sent any invites yet for IFA press events.
According to the Korea Herald, the upcoming LG G Pad tablet will sport an 8.3-inch display with Full HD resolution, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM. Considering the sizes of tablets currently available on the market, 8.3 inches seems like an odd choice, but LG may be looking to set itself apart from rivals in whatever way it can.
The rumored size of the upcoming G Pad suggests that the slate will aim to compete against the iPad Mini, the Google Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire HD and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, among other slates in this category.
Currently no other details regarding the upcoming LG G Pad tablet are available and there is no word on pricing yet. If rumors prove to be accurate and LG will unveil its slate at the IFA trade show in Berlin, however, more details should become available shortly. Stay tuned.
